A MINI GUIDE TO CORONET PEAK
Whilst living in Queenstown for a month, I could see the Coronet Peak from my bedroom at the housesit. The longer we stayed, the snowier the peak became so we ventured up to the top to explore. The afternoon up there was my highlight of my time in Queenstown! Although Coronet Peak is renowned for skiing, you can explore the mountain and get the gondola to the peak, which is what we did as we had animals to look after at the housesit and didn’t have ample time to ski. If you’re planning a visit, here are a few things to know:
1. Getting There:
Coronet Peak is approximately a 20-minute drive from Queenstown. You can either rent a car or take a shuttle service from town. The road to the ski area is well signposted, making it easy to find. If you prefer not to drive, consider booking a guided tour that includes transportation. It’s a very scenic drive!
2. Skiing and Snowboarding:
Coronet Peak is a premier ski resort in New Zealand, offering diverse terrain suitable for all skill levels. From gentle slopes for beginners to challenging runs for advanced skiers, there's something for everyone. The resort boasts a modern lift system, ensuring minimal wait times and maximum time on the slopes. If you don't have your own gear, rentals are available on-site. Lessons are also offered for those looking to improve their skills or learn to ski or snowboard for the first time.
3. Stunning Views:
Even if you're not hitting the slopes, Coronet Peak offers breathtaking panoramic views that are worth the visit alone. Take a ride on the gondola to the summit and soak in the sweeping vistas of Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu, and the surrounding mountains. The gondola costs $35 return, and you can spend as much time up there as you please. We hiked along the summit before watching the paragliders descend.
4. Facilities and Amenities:
Coronet Peak boasts excellent facilities to enhance your experience. The base building offers ticketing services, equipment rentals, and a ski school. There are also several dining options available, ranging from casual cafes to full-service restaurants, where you can refuel and enjoy a meal or a hot drink. Additionally, the resort provides modern restrooms and ample parking spaces for visitors.
5. Summer Activities:
Although famous for winter sports, Coronet Peak offers activities beyond the snowy season. In the summer months (December to March), the mountain transforms into a haven for mountain biking and hiking. Explore the network of trails that wind through the alpine terrain, taking in the scenic beauty of the area. Mountain bike rentals are available for those seeking an adrenaline rush on the downhill tracks.
6. Additional Tips:
- Dress appropriately for the weather and wear layers, as conditions can change quickly in the mountains.
- Check the weather and snow conditions before your visit, especially during the winter months.
- Purchase lift passes in advance or online to save time on the day of your visit.
- If you're not confident driving in snowy conditions, consider taking a shuttle or booking a guided tour.
- Don't forget your camera to capture the remarkable scenery and memories of your time at Coronet Peak.
Coronet Peak offers a memorable alpine experience in the heart of Queenstown. Whether you're seeking adventure on the slopes or simply want to soak in the beauty of the mountains, this iconic destination will leave you in awe.
